Gene L. Potthast, 83, of Greenville passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital, Chesterfield, MO. Gene Potthast born March 7, 1930 of Frank and Edith Potthast and died on June 7, 2013. Gene was born and lived his entire life in Bond County attending Greenville schools. He was active in 4-H and the FFA and was awarded the American Farmer degree. After his high school graduation he farmed with his father. He married Shirley Morris on June 9, 1950 and they had four children, Dennis, Denise, David and Diane. Gene was a charter member of the Bond County Fair Association and the American Farm Heritage Museum. He was Superintendent of the Dairy Department of the Fair and active in the Illinois Brown Swiss Association for several years. He served as a 4-H leader for several years. He was an active member of the St. Lawrence Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11707. Gene enjoyed woodworking and International Tractors. Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley; his sister Nyla Strole; son Dennis Potthast, wife Patricia; daughter Denise Richter; son David Potthast, wife Tami; daughter Diane Paul, husband Tom; 7 grandchildren: Jennifer Riesmeyer, Stephanie Orms, Ashley Paul, Rachel Ann Richter, Ali Potthast Austin Potthast and Hannah Paul and 3 great grandchildren: Hadley and Paige Riesmeyer and Henry Orms. Memorials are to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund and the American Farm Heritage Museum.
