Obituary for Doris J. Hughey

Doris J. Hughey (84) of Greenville died suddenly on January 22, 2013, in her home at the Glenwood.Mrs. Hughey was born on January 10, 1929, in Uniontown, PA, to Alva E. "Jack" Harford and Dorothy (McClure) Harford. She married George "Mac" Hughey on June 10, 1949, in the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville then located on Main Street. Mrs. Hughey was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey L. Hughey, born on July 7, 1956, who died on December 13, 1975, while enrolled in an Internship from Purdue University at the Kodak Corporation in Rochester, NY. Survivors include Dr. Susan E. Hughey-Rasler, wife of Thomas E. Rasler, of Greenville. Mrs. Hughey was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Howard Harford, Wilson T. Harford, and Marian Harford who died in infancy. Mrs. Hughey grew up in Greenville until the age of 15 when she traveled with her mother to the Los Angeles, CA, area to be near her father who served as a Chaplain in the United States Army. In 1945 she and her mother traversed the country by bus and train to return to Greenville while her father served personnel returning from the war in Boston and Washington, D.C. Mrs. Hughey graduated from Greenville High School in 1948 and completed course work from Greenville College and Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. In her early career, Mrs. Hughey worked for the Illinois Bell Telephone company, transferred to a position as a dental assistant in Wichita, KS, in order to assist with her mother's illnesses (diabetes and cancer) as her father pursued his pastoral assignment for the Free Methodist denomination. After marriage, Mrs. Hughey worked as a technical assistant for Dr. Boyd E. McCracken, a tax accountant for the firm owned by Mrs. Evelyn Reynolds, and as an Administrative Assistant to the President of Greenville College under the administrations of Dr. Orley Herron and Dr. W. Richard Stephens. Mrs. Hughey retired in 1987 to explore her interests in genealogical research. She contributed regularly to the National Family Tree Maker Society. After her diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in 1988, Mrs. Hughey was a founding and organizing member of the Greenville Chapter of the American Association for Parkinson's Disease (AAPD), supported and maintained by Greenville Regional Hospital. Mrs. Hughey served as a teacher, Deacon, and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. She is a member of the national Cresap Society, the National Association of Genealogy, the American Association for Parkinson's Disease, and a 20 year participant of the Memory and Aging Project of Washington University Medical Center. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church and Greenville Regional Hospital.
