Obituary for Don Speraneo

Donald Speraneo, born January 27, 1940, passed away on May 31, 2013 at his home. The visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 3-7 PM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. The funeral service will take place following the visitation. Donald, born in St. Louis, MO, was the son of the late Anthony and Ida Jane Speraneo. He married Antoinette Speraneo (Buchholz) on March 2, 1957. They lived in Cahokia and Okawville before settling in Greenville, IL. Don worked tirelessly to support his family. He spent 45 years with the Pacific Union Rail, 42 years as an engineer, in addition to his 45 years as a construction worker in the Local 520 Operating Engineers. Despite his endless hours of labor, Don was an active family man and a valuable member of the community. Donald Speraneo was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus 11707. He also spent time serving as a 4th degree Knight and Faithful Navigator for the Knights of Columbus Assembly 023 of Highland, IL. He furthered his community contributions as an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Don served as an Eucharistic Minister, sang in the choir, sat on the Board of Trustees, and served a term as the Head of the Financial Committee. Community contribution was important to Donald Speraneo, but his family and hobbies were always an emphasis. Don enjoyed his time traveling throughout the states with Tonie. Since 1987 they have been square dancing across the country. Don was also an active outdoorsman. He was an avid hunter, fisher, and marksman. He taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the joys of the great-outdoors every opportunity he had. Even as his health faded, he took every chance to visit the farm (Speraneo Paradise Acres), while encouraging his family to do so as well. Donald Speraneo is survived by his beloved wife, Tonie, and seven children: Susan Hohlt (Jerry) of Greenville, IL, Robert Speraneo (Teresa) of Greenville, IL, Donna Hall (Richard) of O'Fallon, MO, Linda Methvin (Gary) of Greenville, IL, Deborah Klincar (Thomas) of Killeen, TX, Mark Speraneo (Sheryl) of Greenville, IL, and Richard Speraneo (Lisa Gail) of Hillsboro, IL. He has been blessed with sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren Don is also survived by six siblings: Mary Ann Grothe, Ronald Speraneo, Barbara Petzall, Carl Nicholas Speranoe, Antoinette Clogston, and Pamela Hollenburg. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Ida Jane, Rose Marie Whit (sister), Anthony Speraneo Jr. (brother), John Speraneo (brother), Thomas Speraneo (brother), Jenny Danforth (sister), and Mary "Chrisy" Hall (granddaughter). In passing, Don requested all memorials be donated to the Knights of Columbus 11707 Scholarship Fund, St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Greenville, IL, or Bond County Hospice.
